unlikeには「同じでない、異なった」という意味の形容詞と、「同じでない人・物事」という名詞、また「～とは違って」という意味の前置詞の役割があります。今回は前置詞の用法について学びます。

今回は、これまでに学んだ内容を、クイズに答えながら復習しましょう。

今回のテーマは「not only A but also B: AばかりでなくBも」の表現です。比較的なじみのある表現ですが、長い文に紛れ込んでしまい、特にnot onlyとbut alsoとの間が離れていると、気付かないことがあるのではないでしょうか。

helpの後に動詞の原形またはto＋動詞の原形を後続させて、「～するのを手伝う」という表現があります。

couldはcan「～することができる」の過去形であることは、皆さんご存知だと思います。しかしそれ以外にも、可能性や推測、依頼といった様々な意味と使い方があります。今回は可能性の意味を表すcouldを勉強しましょう。またthatの役割と省略についても、学んでいきたいと思います。

Japanese companies are entering a new era in which they cannot survive without new drug development, also without true globalization. Given these changes, how are companies to ride over these big waves? In this special issue, we have special guests, Mr. Toshihiko Takeda, the Deputy Director-General of Health Insurance Bureau, Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, and Dr. Toshio Miyata, Executive Director of Health and Global Policy Institute,to discuss various issues surrounding the pharmaceutical industry, including the impact of RCHC, challenges of new drug development, and the way to globalization.

副詞のyetは否定文と疑問文で使用され、否定文では「まだ」という意味に、疑問文では「もう」という意味になります。今回は否定文の用法を勉強します。特に「have yet to 動詞」という表現では、否定を表すnotやnoがない肯定文ですが、否定的な意味になりますので、注意が必要です。

「～、whereas…」は「～であるのに対し、（一方、ところが）…だ」と、2つの事柄が対照的な場合や、相反す場合に使用する表現です。簡単な例文を挙げると、「She is cautious, whereas her brother is careless .　彼女は慎重であるのに対し、彼女の兄は軽率だ」という使い方ができます。また特徴的な点はwhereasを挟んだ前後の節の構成が、似通っていることが多いということです。

「since～」は大きく分けると、「～以来、～から」という時制に関する意味と、「～だから」という原因・理由を表す意味の二つがありますが、今回は前者について勉強していきます。afterやfromも「～から」という意味を持ちますが、これらと異なりSinceは過去の一時点から現在まで（または、その後の過去の一時点まで）、継続していることを表します。よって完了形と一緒に使われるのが一般的です。
